In the Name of Honour

Sarah Charlton Charitable Foundation

One Mayfair, London

18th - 23rd September 2013

In the Name of Honour was an exhibition and auction that aimed to raise awareness of violence against women both globally and in the UK, as well as to promote the work of the participating artists. The exhibition was conceived and hosted by the Sara Charitable Foundation (SCCF), a UK charity that supports victims of domestic abuse and honour-based violence.

In the Name of Honour explored the many different forms of violence that women experience globally, with a particular focus on violence that exists in the UK today. Some of the works selected for exhibition engaged in the different underlying factors that lead to violence against women, such as the concept of honour that exists amongst many communities worldwide, as well as exploring the devastating and often long-lasting effects of violence in these communities. Other works investigated the significance of gender and the female body, prompting viewers to ask themselves what it means to be a woman and what the feminine represents from their perspective.

Proceeds raised from the auction directly funded trained professionals known as Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs) to help both women and children who have been abused.

An IDVA’s job is to liaise directly with the police, social services, and courts to protect their clients as effectively as possible. Proceeds were also used to fund prevention workers trained to educate children and young adults (male and female) on healthy relationships and honour-based violence to break the cycle of abuse.

The exhibition was accompanied by a 160-page auction catalogue.
